Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa commits funds for UNDP’s Strengthening Rule of Law in Malakand project

Chief Minister, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) has granted approval for the allocation of resources to the Strengthening Rule of Law in Malakand (SRLM) Project out of the Annual Development Programme to be commenced from July 2012 till June 2015. Under the cost sharing arrangement, the Government of KPK will allocate PKR 335 Million (25%) while UNDP will provide PKR 1004 Million (75%) for a duration of three years in both cases.

The SRLM Project is currently being implemented by UNDP in close partnership with Peshawar High Court, P&D, Home, Law and Local Government Departments, bar associations and NGOs.

The goal of the project is to improve court functioning, easy access to justice and legal aid to the needy people, encouraging alternate dispute resolution through jirga and court appointed commission, effective prosecution and investigation of criminal cases.

All the stakeholders have shown confidence in the SRLM Project and have found that the Project will bring positive impact in delivery of services pertaining to quick dispensation of justice, legal assistance, access to justice, improved investigation and prosecution and alternate dispute resolution. Senior Minister Planning and Development Mr. Rahim Dad Khan had inaugurated the Project on 15th December 2011 in the presence of all major stakeholders. The Project will bring a positive impact on the justice sector including judiciary, police, prosecution and bars.

UNDP and the P&D Department will soon work out modalities for the implementation of Project with respect to provincial funding.
