UNISDR head calls for 'quantum leap' in approach to recurring floods in Pakistan

The Special Representative of the UN Secretary General  for Disaster Risk Reduction, Margareta Wahlström, arrived on a three-day  visit to Pakistan today during which she will meet with  President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, the  National Disaster Management Authority, Meteorological Department  officials and aid donors, to discuss future risk reduction measures as the  country tries to cope with floods which have displaced an estimated 5.4  million people.

New guide to help developing countries speed up access to climate finance

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) today launched a guidebook aimed at helping decision makers in developing countries to better take advantage of the billions pledged to address climate change.The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) today launched a guidebook aimed at helping decision makers in developing countries to better take advantage of the billions pledged to address climate change.“Blending Climate Finance through National Climate Funds” is based on UNDP’s experience in setting up, managing and advising 750 funds and providing services for over US$5 billion in contributions pooled from multiple donors.

Key stakeholders renew commitment to sustainable development in Pakistan

A National consultation was held today in preparation for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD)/Rio+20 June 2012. It was jointly organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in its capacity as Co-Chair of the One UN Joint Programme on Environment and the Sustainable Development Policy Institue (SDPI). The Consultation, followed provincial consultations in Lahore and Karachi and engaged a wide range of Pakistani stakeholders (Government, private sector, NGOs/think- tanks & civil society).

Equator Prize 2012: Call for Nominations

The Equator Initiative is pleased to announce the call for nominations for the Equator Prize 2012, which will recognize 25 outstanding local initiatives that are working to advance sustainable development solutions for people, nature and resilient communities. The 25 recipients of the Equator Prize 2012 will each receive $5,000 (USD), with 10 selected for special recognition and a total of $20,000 (USD). Representatives of winning communities will participate in the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), which will be held in Brazil in June 2012.
