Background The project will mainstream biodiversity into a range of productive sector activities across a landscape covering 150,000 ha of which approximately 100,000 ha is covered by Juniper forest. The Project will work closely with local communities to determine acceptable ways to modify grazing systems and incorporate biodiversity concerns into the Juniper forests of Baluchistan. The Project will determine ways to remove barriers to sustainable energy use, to demonstrate innovative and sustainable models of tourism/recreation and hunting. The Project will first work in selected communities and will build government-community working partnerships. The Project will then develop capacity – in key government agencies and in communities – to replicate and disseminate project results. Objectives To improve the condition of the Juniper forest ecosystem, in order to conserve biodiversity and increase the ecosystem’s contribution to sustainable development. Key Achievements 10 Women Community Conservation Organizations (WCCOs) formed. 12 Community Conservation Organization members trained in livestock health and management from Centre for Advance Studies in Immunology (vaccine related) and Biotechnology, Quetta. A booklet on the Friday Sermons: Islam and Environment printed and disseminated among project stakeholders. 13 new schemes covering water conveyance, water storage, water supply and protection of fruit orchards from harmful insects launched. Study for valuation of goods and services accruing from the Juniper forest ecosystem is in progress with support from IUCN Asia Regional Office. Construction of three stock water ponds for provision of drinking water to livestock of the CCOs. 6,489 livestock vaccinated in the Batay Thair - Nispha, Chautair and Koshki valleys. 250 fuel efficient stoves prepared and distributed among the community members. Maintenance of forest plant nursery of 50,000 seedlings raised under the project. |
