National Environmental Information Management System (NEIMS)

Background

The project has been developed by the Ministry of Environment under the sib-programme of “policy Coordination and Environmental Governance of NEAP-SP, in line with recommendation of NEAP as well as other relevant policies and plans of Government of Pakistan. It is envisaged that under the project a network of relevant organization equipped with environmental Information technology and tools and sharing common data infrastructure will be set up to facilitate management of environment related information.

Objectives

The overall objective of the project is to contribute to promotion of sustainable development through building the national capacity in developing, managing and utilizing environmental information for informed decision-making.

The specific objectives of the project include:

To review and analyze the current situation of environmental data/information management in Pakistan;
To establish an appropriate institutional and technical framework for NEIMS Pakistan;
To develop sectoral and inter-sectoral database of existing environmental information in the country;
To establish functional National Environmental Information System; and
To build and strengthen the capacities of key organizations involved in establishment and sustainable operations of NEIMS.

Key Achievements

National and Provincial Compendiums/Handbooks finalized. The data in these reports to be fed into the Management Information System to be activated during 2011

The federal and provincial Environmental Protection Agencies established as nodal agencies for NEIMS. Capacity of these agencies enhanced to opertionalise NEIMS.

Sector and intersectoral database on air, water, land, forest, and biodiversity compiled for all the regions of Pakistan. The database will populate the MIS during 2011

Planned training of 10 officials in GIS and Remote Sensing Technologies completed. Trained experts to be engaged in monitoring of environmental indicators using satellite images
