PRESS RELEASE
Provincial Disaster Risk Management Plan for Sind launched Karachi, 12th August 2009: The Provincial Disaster Risk Management for Sind was launched today by the Minister for Revenue and Relief Sindh, Mr. Jam Mehtab Hussain Dahar. This Plan has been developed by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Sindh with the technical assistance of National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and UNDP. It is the product of an intensive process of consultations with a wide range of partners. With the implementation of this plan, it is hoped that a disaster prevention framework will be put in place across the province. This will help in protecting the lives of people as well as vital infrastructure against impending disasters and will put in place effective mechanisms for preparedness and mitigation against multiple hazards. The Plan also advises on how to manage an emergency response in an effective and timely manner.
UNDP has been supporting NDMA and their provincial and district-level counterparts in developing Disaster Risk Management in Punjab, Balochistan, AJK and the Northern Areas of Pakistan. Along with these District level Disaster Risk Management Plans for the 50 high risk districts are also being compiled which will act as model plans for the remaining districts.
The launch event was attended by key stakeholders including Shaukat Nawaz Tahir, Senior Member NDMA, Mr. Shaukat Nawaz Tahir and relevant UN, civil society and government representatives and Mr. Ghulam Ali Shah Pasha, Senior Memebr Board of Revenue Sindh. Reiterating the importance of disaster risk management, Mr. Shaukat Nawaz Tahir stated that the provincial DRM plan is to promote a culture of disaster prevention across the province by taking all provincial stakeholders aboard and consolidating the efforts and resources for a safer province.
